Social Pressure in a Competitive Peer Environment

Students at River Hill High School and other Clarksville area schools grow up in one of Maryland’s most competitive academic environments, where social comparison around grades, colleges and extracurriculars is constant. Group counseling gives teens a structured setting to work through that pressure alongside peers facing the same thing, rather than feeling like the only one struggling in a community that looks uniformly successful from the outside.

How Group Counseling Works

Groups are led by a therapist and bring together a small number of participants working through related concerns. The group format offers something individual therapy cannot: hearing from others facing similar challenges, and practicing new skills in a real, supported social setting.

Who Group Counseling Helps

  • People who feel isolated in what they are working through
  • Patients who benefit from peer feedback alongside clinical guidance
  • People building or practicing social and communication skills
  • Patients continuing progress after individual therapy

Coordination With Individual Care

Group counseling can stand alone or run alongside individual therapy or psychiatric care. Because all of it happens within the same practice, the group facilitator can coordinate with a patient’s other providers when appropriate.
